BISSELL SpotClean HydroSteam 3700E: Before you steam the sofa
A coffee cup can turn a quiet afternoon into a very specific research project. You need to deal with one patch of upholstery, not reorganize your entire cleaning cupboard.
The BISSELL SpotClean HydroSteam 3700E is built around that smaller job: A portable, corded carpet and upholstery cleaner with a hose, separate water tanks and a choice of cleaning modes. The useful question is whether those modes suit the surfaces you actually own.

The quick verdict
Shortlist it if recurring, localized spills happen on materials that permit the intended cleaning method, and you are happy to fill, use, empty and rinse a machine. The steam option gives it another method to choose from; it also makes checking material compatibility essential.
Skip it if your main problem is routine loose dust, large areas of carpet, or upholstery that cannot tolerate the treatment. Leather, velvet, synthetic fabrics and delicate or steam-sensitive materials are among the manual’s exclusions. Owning a nice sofa is not, on its own, a reason to steam it.
What it actually does
Think of the 3700E as a small cleaning system you bring to a particular mess. The machine stays on a level surface while the hose and attached tool reach the area being treated. Its clean-water and dirty-water tanks are separate.
Cleaning still involves your hands. The manual describes applying the selected treatment, scrubbing with the tool, then releasing the trigger and making slow extraction passes toward you. A tool sitting on fabric does not do the whole job by itself.
It is also corded. Plan where the machine will sit, where the socket is and how you will move the hose before you start. For someone managing repeated small incidents, that setup may make sense. For someone hoping to replace a regular vacuum, it solves a different problem: The manual tells you to vacuum loose dirt first.
Three modes, three decisions
SteamWash Max Clean combines spray and steam. The manual’s guide associates it with compatible carpets, area rugs and upholstery, including beverage, oily and sticky messes. The right mode still depends on the material and the mess.
Steam mode provides the steam option. The tool guide describes applications such as permitted upholstery, drapes, tile and grout, using the appropriate attachment. Those examples do not override a material maker’s instructions or the machine’s exclusions.
Wash mode uses spray rather than steam. The manual’s table pairs it with carpet and area-rug cleaning, including pet and dairy messes. The useful distinction is the method: A different type of stain can call for a different mode. Do not assume the hottest treatment is the right treatment.
Use the manual’s surface-and-tool chart for the particular job, rather than treating the dial as a strength setting you always turn to maximum.

Read the fabric label before the product description
Check the furniture maker’s care instructions first. The manual illustrates a W care tag for water-cleanable textiles, but a water-cleaning symbol alone does not prove that steam is suitable. You need compatibility with the material, the intended mode and the tool.
The manual excludes leather, wax-polished furniture or floors, synthetic fabrics, velvet and other delicate, steam-sensitive materials. If your sofa falls into one of those categories, do not use this guide to justify trying it anyway. Ask the furniture maker for the appropriate cleaning route.
Before cleaning a permitted material, test a small hidden area and inspect it when dry. Stop if the color changes. Avoid over-wetting, keep the machine level, and keep steam away from people, animals and electrical components. These checks are part of using this kind of cleaner, not a footnote to the purchase.
The part after the spill
The dirty-water tank needs emptying and rinsing. The hose needs cleaning. The nozzle needs attention, and the manual says to switch off and unplug the machine before that maintenance. The tanks are not dishwasher-safe.
This is the real ownership trade-off. A spot cleaner can put a targeted cleaning method within reach, but it creates a short cleanup routine of its own. If you know you will leave dirty water sitting in the machine, factor that into the decision now.
Use only the compatible BISSELL formulas specified for portable cleaners and follow the machine’s fill markings and instructions. Dish soap, vinegar and homemade mixtures are not a shortcut recommended by the manual. Budget for suitable formula as well as the machine, without assuming how long a bottle will last in your home.
What to check in the box
Check the exact 3700E bundle before ordering. The manual describes several tools, while explicitly saying that accessories vary by model and the carton’s contents list is the reference for the purchase.
Do not rely on a photo of several accessories as proof that all of them will be included. Check the selected model, supplied tools and formula, local electrical compatibility, seller, returns and applicable warranty terms. The manufacturer’s manual gives the 3700E a limited two-year warranty, with conditions; that is not unconditional cover for every situation.
Who should put it on the shortlist?
It makes the most sense for a home with repeated, localized spills on suitable materials, accessible power and somewhere dry to store the machine. You should also be comfortable choosing the mode and doing manual passes, rather than expecting an automatic demonstration result.
It makes less sense for a home dominated by excluded fabrics, for whole-room carpet work, or for someone who wants a machine without a rinse-and-store routine. If spills are rare, compare the purchase and storage commitment with the cleaning approach recommended by your furniture maker.
Questions worth asking before buying
Can it replace my vacuum?
Keep the regular vacuum. BISSELL’s instructions say to remove loose dirt before this cleaning process.
Can I use steam on any sofa?
No. The material restrictions and furniture maker’s instructions come first. A W label by itself is not steam approval.
Will it remove an old stain?
We cannot promise that. Stain type, material, previous treatment and technique can all affect the outcome.
Is drying time fixed?
Do not plan around a guaranteed number. Avoid over-wetting and allow the material to dry fully before use. This guide does not claim a measured drying time.
Which model is this guide about?
The black BISSELL SpotClean HydroSteam 3700E. Check the full model code on the selected listing and the supplied carton; this guide does not treat other regional suffixes as interchangeable.
Our buying take
The appeal is a targeted response to a familiar problem: One spill, one compatible surface, the right mode. The trade-off is equally practical: A cord, manual work, formula and a machine to clean afterward.
If those terms fit your home, the 3700E belongs on your shortlist. Start with the sofa label. The shopping tab can wait a minute.
